Shares of Halliburton Company are up 2.5% today after reporting first quarter earnings which pleased Wall Street.  Earnings per share (EPS) came in at $0.73, slightly higher than the consensus $0.71.

In other news today, SPT Energy Group has entered into a 51%-owned joint venture with Halliburton for fracture stimulation services in Xinjiang, China.  Morgan Stanley commented, “[W]e think it is highly likely that SPT and HAL will extend the cooperation scope from fracture stimulation to other services, such as drilling and well completion.  There is also good potential for the extension of geo-market from Xinjiang to other oil fields in China.”  The two companies have been working closely together since 2004.

Halliburton has potential legal liability for the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
